A different sort of Mirror: Takaki's use of the Tempest
In the first chapter of " A Different Mirror” by Ronald Takaki, this individual explains stereotypes and biases of light, Eurocentric perceptions that have been around since the first days of the colonies and settlements in this article. Beginning with early colonists and their treatment of the natives, there is a pattern of ruthless acquisition of land and goods. In accordance to Takaki, the early settlers judged natives as missing everything recognizable in a civil society. It never took place to these people that the natives had under no circumstances been exposed to all their european " civilized” ways and did not have knowledge of sophisticated weaponry as their culture did not need these kinds of devices of destruction. They were doing have tools and method of hunting and gathering food but it was all quite unsophisticated compared to european breakthroughs. Shakespeare presented the character Caliban in " The Tempest” and portrayed him being a barbarian and a fierce, ferocious incapable of foster (37). This is often interpreted as an indirect depiction of what was in that case believed about native americans. According to Takaki, the Caliban character would have just as easily represented Africans that had began migrating to the new land. Together all of us slowly peel away the layers of your own bias that have been with us longer than any of us have been completely alive, even as move toward an ideal that on paper has been online since the daybreak of our superb nation but in reality is nonetheless a goal to get attained.
