Bakla or Bading, a negative Filipino word for gay, is commonly used. Tibo or perhaps tomboy includes a similar function, and identifies lesbians, usually of the butch and manly type. A far more benign slang word to get gay men is billy boy. To get Filipino gays, the Tagalog phrase " paglaladlad ng kapa" (literally means " unfurling of the cape" ) refers to the coming-out process. Although gays and lesbians are generally tolerated within Filipino society, you will still find widespread situations of elegance.

Swardspeak is actually a vernacular vocabulary derived from Englog (English-Tagalog) and is used by numerous gay Filipinos. It uses factors from Tagalog, English, and Spanish, and some are coming from Nippongo, along with celebrities' titles and signature brands, giving them new connotations in the context of this unique language. An exclusive trait of swardspeak is the fact it immediately identifies the speaker as homosexual, so that it is easy for people of that positioning to transmission to each other in a place in which such tendencies are not easy to display (ie in the Philippines). This makes an exclusive community among its speakers and helps them to avoid cultural compression.

By using swardspeak, Filipino gay men can resist the dominant culture of their place and build a space that belongs to them. The language is constantly changing, with old keyword phrases becoming obsolete and fresh phrases usually entering everyday usage, showing changes in their very own culture and also maintaining uniqueness. The powerful nature of the language will not cement by itself in one culture and allows for even more freedom in expression amongst its loudspeakers.
